Daily: Cleaning the Milk System

This is the task that separates W8 owners who get consistent foam from the ones who do not.

The W8 manual states that the fine foam frother must be cleaned daily if milk has been prepared, to make sure it functions properly and in the interests of hygiene. The machine helps you remember: if milk was prepared before you switch off, the W8 prompts you to run a milk system cleaning. If you ignore it, the switch-off continues automatically after 30 seconds, which is why a lot of owners never notice the prompt at all.

The cycle itself is almost entirely automatic once you have set it up. You pour one dosing unit of cleaner into the supplied container, position it under the hot-water spout and the fine foam frother, connect the milk pipe, and press Next.

Rinse Is Not Clean

The W8 has a separate milk system rinse that runs on water alone. It starts automatically 15 minutes after you prepare a speciality coffee with milk, or you can set it to manual and trigger it from the Cockpit.

The rinse clears fresh milk out of the line. It does not remove the protein and fat film that builds up on the walls of the circuit. Only the cleaning cycle, with cleaner in the container, does that. Running rinses and skipping cleans is the slow road to a blocked frother.

Weekly: Strip and Rinse the Fine Foam Frother

The manual recommends dismantling and rinsing the professional fine foam frother once a week, and immediately if foam quality drops or milk starts spraying.

You remove the milk pipe and rinse it, remove the frother, take it apart, and rinse every piece under running water. For badly dried-on residue, the manual gives a soak: 250 ml of water with one dosing unit of milk system cleaner, then a thorough rinse.

When Prompted: The Cleaning Tablet Cycle

The W8 asks for this after 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses. You do not need to track it or run it early. When the Cockpit shows “Clean”, start the programme.

It runs about 20 minutes and must not be interrupted. The tablet does not go in at the start: the cycle pauses partway through and displays “Add cleaning tablet”, and you drop it into the ground coffee filler funnel then.

Filter and Descaling: The W8 Rule Most Guides Miss

The W8 takes the CLARIS Pro Smart+ cartridge. This is the professional-line filter, not the CLARIS Smart+ or CLARIS Blue sold for home machines.

Here is the part worth knowing before you buy anything: while a CLARIS Pro Smart+ is in use, the W8 does not have to be descaled and will not prompt you to. The filter takes the descaling task off your schedule entirely. When the cartridge is exhausted the filter symbol lights red, you swap it, and the machine detects the change and runs a filter rinse by itself.

If you run the W8 without a filter, descaling comes back. The machine tracks it against your water hardness setting and prompts for “Descale” when it is due. The programme takes about 20 minutes, and it needs 3 Jura descaling tablets fully dissolved in 600 ml of water, poured into the emptied water tank. Do not interrupt it.

Separately from the machine descaling programme, limescale film builds up inside the water tank itself. The manual suggests descaling the tank occasionally: remove the filter, dissolve 3 tablets in a full tank, leave it several hours or overnight, then empty and rinse thoroughly.
