If milk has been prepared, the Jura W8 needs its milk system cleaned that same day. The W8 manual is direct about it: the fine foam frother must be cleaned daily if milk has been prepared, both so it keeps working properly and for hygiene. The good news is that the machine does nearly all of it. Your job is four physical actions and one dose of cleaner. No measuring, no water, no counting.

What You Need
- The container for milk system cleaning that shipped with your W8. It is the white two-part container in the accessory box
- Original Jura milk system cleaner. The manual is explicit that only original Jura maintenance products should be used, and warns that the wrong agent can damage the machine or leave traces in the water
- The milk pipe fitted with an HP3 connector. Without the right connector the pipe will not seat on the container correctly
- The machine switched on, water tank filled

The original bottle dispenses exactly one dosing unit at a time, which is the measurement the W8 manual refers to. Buying the dispensing bottle rather than loose sachets removes the guesswork completely.
The Procedure
The W8 shows the prompt “Clean the milk system” in the Cockpit when the cycle is due. You can also reach it from the Cockpit at any time.
Step 1: Open the Jura Cockpit
Press and hold the button marked with the maintenance icon for about two seconds to enter the Cockpit.
Step 2: Select “Clean the milk system”, then Start
Press Clean the milk system, then press Start. The display moves to the setup instructions and waits for you.
Step 3: Remove the Milk Pipe
Take the milk pipe out of the milk container or milk cooler. Leave it attached to the machine at the frother end.
Step 4: Add One Dosing Unit of Cleaner
Pour one dosing unit of Jura milk system cleaner into the supplied cleaning container.

Step 5: Position the Container

Step 6: Connect the Milk Pipe to the Container
Connect the milk pipe to the container. The manual notes that for this to work correctly the pipe must be fitted with a connector HP3.
Step 7: Press Next and Leave It Alone
Press Next. The W8 cleans the fine foam frother and the milk pipe automatically, and the operation stops on its own. You do not need to intervene, refill anything, or restart it.
When it finishes, rinse the container and the milk pipe under running water before putting them away.
Do I Add Water? No.
This is the single most common W8 cleaning question, and the answer is unambiguous: the W8 milk system cleaning procedure contains no instruction to add water to the container. You add one dosing unit of cleaner. That is the entire contents.
The machine pushes hot water through the hot-water spout and the milk circuit during the cycle. That is where the water comes from.
The confusion usually traces to a different task. When you dismantle the fine foam frother for its weekly rinse and find badly dried-on milk residue, the manual does give a soak: 250 ml of water with one dosing unit of cleaner, for the individual parts. That is a hand-soak in a separate receptacle. It has nothing to do with the automatic cycle, and copying that quantity into the cleaning container is not what Jura asks for.
Rinse vs Clean: They Are Different Programmes
The W8 has both, and they are not substitutes.

Rinsing is not a lighter version of cleaning. It is a holding action between drinks. A W8 that only ever gets rinsed will eventually froth badly and then stop drawing milk properly.
What About the Prompt Disappearing?
If milk has been prepared before you switch the machine off, the W8 asks you to run a milk system cleaning. After 30 seconds it gives up and continues shutting down. That short window is why many owners insist their machine never asks.
You do not have to wait for the prompt. You can open the Cockpit and start the cleaning programme yourself at any time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need this if I drink black coffee?
If anyone has used the milk system, yes. In an office where colleagues make cappuccinos, the machine needs its daily milk clean regardless of what you personally drink. Milk residue does not care who poured it.
Can I use a cup or a bowl instead of the supplied container?
The manual tells you to use the container supplied for milk system cleaning. The pipe has to connect to it, and it has to sit correctly under both the hot-water spout and the frother. A random cup fails both requirements. Replacements are available if yours has gone missing.
Can I use more cleaner if the system is really dirty?

Is this the same as the cleaning tablet cycle?
