Four products, four separate circuits, zero overlap. Jura sells cleaning tablets, milk system cleaner, descaling tablets and CLARIS filter cartridges, and owners routinely assume at least two of them do the same thing. They do not. Each one targets a different deposit in a different part of the machine, and the W8 manual warns plainly that using the wrong agent can damage the machine or leave traces in the water.

Never Interchange These
This is the warning worth putting above everything else. The W8 manual repeats the same caution across three separate maintenance procedures: use only original Jura maintenance products, because the wrong agent can damage the machine and leave residue in water you are going to drink.
That caution applies in both directions:
- A brew-system cleaning tablet in the milk container is the wrong chemistry in the wrong circuit, and the milk cleaning cycle is not designed to flush a tablet of that size.
- Mini-tabs in the ground coffee funnel will not clean the brew unit and will end up somewhere they were never meant to go.
- Descaling agent is acidic and belongs in the water tank during a descaling programme, never in the milk circuit.
- Household products - vinegar, dish soap, citric acid powders - do not belong in any of these circuits. Vinegar in particular attacks seals and is difficult to flush out.
Cleaning Tablets: The Brew Circuit
Coffee is oily. Those oils coat the inside of the brew unit, go rancid, and start tainting every cup long before anything looks dirty. Daily rinsing pushes water through but does not dissolve the film.
On the W8, the machine counts for you: after 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses it displays “Clean”. The programme takes about 20 minutes and must not be interrupted.
The sequence catches new owners out because the tablet goes in partway through, not at the start. You begin the cycle, empty the drip tray and grounds container when asked, place receptacles under the coffee spout and the fine foam frother, and press Next. Water flows. Then the cycle pauses and shows “Add cleaning tablet”. That is when you open the ground coffee filler funnel, drop the tablet in, close the cover, and press Next again.

Milk leaves protein and fat behind on every surface it touches. Water rinsing clears what is loose; only a surfactant cleaner lifts the bonded film.
On the W8 this is a daily task whenever milk has been prepared - stricter than the weekly milk cleaning commonly advised for home Jura models. The cleaner goes into the supplied cleaning container as one dosing unit, the container sits under the hot-water spout and the fine foam frother, and the milk pipe connects to it.

Descaling Tablets: The Water Circuit
Limescale is mineral, not organic. Neither cleaning tablets nor milk cleaner touch it, and it builds up wherever water is heated. Left alone it damages the boiler and pump - the failure that ends machines early.
The W8 tracks calcification against your water hardness setting and prompts “Descale” when it is due. The programme takes about 20 minutes and needs 3 Jura descaling tablets fully dissolved in 600 ml of water, poured into the emptied water tank. Do not interrupt it once it starts.
There is also a separate, occasional task: descaling the water tank itself, where limescale film forms independently. Remove the filter, dissolve 3 tablets in a full tank, leave it several hours or overnight, then empty and rinse thoroughly.

A CLARIS cartridge sits in the water tank and treats water on the way in. It removes nothing that is already inside the machine. Calling it a cleaning product is the category error that leads people to skip actual cleaning.
For W8 owners it does one thing worth knowing: the manual states that the W8 no longer has to be descaled while a CLARIS Pro Smart+ cartridge is in use, and the machine will not prompt for descaling. Fitting the filter genuinely removes a maintenance task rather than just reducing it.
Two cautions. First, the W8 takes the CLARIS Pro Smart+, the professional-line cartridge, not the CLARIS Smart+ or CLARIS Blue sold for home machines. Second, when the cartridge is exhausted the filter symbol lights red and the descaling obligation comes back with it.
Quick Sorting Rule
If the problem is coffee, it is a cleaning tablet. If the problem is milk, it is milk system cleaner. If the problem is water and minerals, it is descaling tablets or a filter. Nothing crosses over.
