Why has my W8 not asked for a cleaning tablet yet?
Because it counts, it does not schedule. The W8 prompts “Clean” after 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses. A machine making a few drinks a day can run for a long stretch before it hits either number.
You do not need to run the cycle early, and running it early does not buy you anything. Wait for the prompt. Full detail: Jura W8 maintenance schedule.
Can I run the milk cleaning cycle manually?
Yes. Hold the Cockpit button for about two seconds, open the maintenance section, and select Clean the milk system.
This is genuinely useful, because the automatic prompt is easy to miss: when milk has been prepared before switch-off, the W8 asks for a milk clean and then continues shutting down on its own after 30 seconds.
What is the difference between rinse and clean?
Rinse uses water. Clean uses a Jura maintenance product.

Rinsing is a holding action between drinks. It does not remove the protein film in the milk circuit or the oil film in the brew unit. See how to clean the W8 milk system.
What does “one dosing unit” mean?
One complete portion as dispensed by the original Jura milk system cleaner bottle. Do not count mini-tabs and do not weigh anything. Jura defines the dose by the dispenser, which is why no number appears in the manual.

Do I add water to the white container?
No. The W8 milk system cleaning procedure has no water step. One dosing unit of cleaner goes into the container and nothing else - the machine delivers water itself through the hot-water spout during the cycle.

Where does the milk hose connect?
To the cleaning container itself, after you have removed it from the milk container or cooler and placed the container under the hot-water spout and the fine foam frother.
For the connection to seat correctly the pipe must be fitted with a connector HP3. If yours will not connect, that is the first thing to check. Jura also lists the HP3 milk pipe as a consumable replaced approximately every three months.
Can I use a regular cleaning tablet in the milk system?
No. Different chemistry, different circuit, different programme. The brew-system cleaning tablet goes into the ground coffee filler funnel during the machine cleaning cycle, and only when the machine asks for it mid-cycle.

What if I only drink black coffee but colleagues make milk drinks?
The machine still needs its daily milk system clean. The requirement attaches to the milk having been prepared, not to who drank it.
On a shared office W8 this is worth assigning to someone explicitly, because the failure mode is predictable: everyone assumes the milk drinkers will handle it, nobody does, and the frother blocks.
Why will the cleaning cycle not start?
Check the display for “Too hot”. The system can be too hot to begin a maintenance programme. Wait several minutes for it to cool, or prepare a speciality coffee or hot water to draw heat out, then start again.
If a different message is showing, the machine may be waiting on something else first - a full drip tray, a full grounds container, an empty water tank, or a drip tray that is not seated correctly. Maintenance programmes will not begin until those are cleared.
The prompt disappeared before I could act on it
Expected behaviour, not a fault. The switch-off milk cleaning prompt clears itself after 30 seconds and the machine finishes shutting down.
Start the cycle manually from the Cockpit instead.
Does the W8 need descaling?
Only when it asks. And while a CLARIS Pro Smart+ cartridge is fitted, it will not ask - the manual states the W8 no longer has to be descaled when that filter is in use.
Without a filter, the machine tracks calcification against your water hardness setting and prompts “Descale” when due. The programme needs 3 Jura descaling tablets dissolved in 600 ml of water, poured into the emptied water tank, and takes about 20 minutes.
Do not descale a W8 on a calendar interval it never requested.
My foam has gone bad even though I clean it daily
Move to the mechanical checks: dismantle and rinse the fine foam frother, then inspect the milk pipe and connector.

When should I stop and contact Jura?
When you have run a correct milk system cleaning cycle, dismantled and rinsed the frother, cleaned the frother connector, and checked or replaced the milk pipe and spout, and the machine still will not draw or froth milk properly.
At that point stop. The W8 is a professional-line machine and going further is not owner maintenance. Contact Jura or an authorised service partner, and tell them what you have already ruled out.
